Today in 1865 – Birth of Rudyard Kipling

As a major world figure in the early 20th Century Kipling also found himself the subject of many magazine articles, all of which are collectible to someone with an interest in Kipling, but obviously few of which approach the value of issues containing his original writing. An exception to this would be the September 27, 1926 issue of Time Magazine shown at the top of this piece, which featured him on the front cover.

Today in 1971 – The Peanuts Gang Makes the Cover of Newsweek
Cliff Aliperti | December 27th, 2008 | Magazines, Today's Date | No Comments »
Well, yeah, Marlene Dietrich was born on this date in 1901 too, but this site trends very easily towards the classic films stars and we need to save something for next year, so instead I thought it was pretty cool that 37 year old issue of Newsweek carried a December 27 cover date:
Of course Peanuts [...]
John Ford's Cowboy Kings – Movie Collectibles Guides #4 and 6
Cliff Aliperti | December 27th, 2008 | Movie Collectibles, Videos | No Comments »
A few weeks back I created a Video ID Guide featuring some postcards which were smaller reproductions of the beautiful 11″ X 16″ prints included in the “John Ford Presents Cowboy Kings of Western Fame,” book/collection. I’d mentioned how I’d handled a few of the larger sized collections and referred viewers to my Photo ID Guide showing off this fantastic collectible while bemoaning the fact that it’d been a while since I’d had the pleasure of handling a set.
Today in 1939 – Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Introduced
Cliff Aliperti | December 25th, 2008 | Today's Date | No Comments »
Not the song, but the character of Rudolph himself was unveiled on this date in 1939 by Montgomery Ward in a booklet by Ward employee Robert May. While the date seems appropriate, and I took it from BrainyHistory.com, it is likely not accurate because I’d imagine this booklet was distributed to shoppers leading up to [...]
Today in 1922 – Birth of Ava Gardner
Cliff Aliperti | December 24th, 2008 | Birthdays, Today's Date | No Comments »
One of the screen’s most beautiful stars, Ava Gardner, was born on this date in 1922. Ava’s first big splash on screen came as Kitty Collins in the 1946 adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s The Killers. As further proof that it takes not only beauty, but talent to make a splash in Hollywood it should be [...]

In all Bob Hope performed 22 Christmas shows around the world between that first one in 1948 and his last in 1972. These shows were filmed beginning in 1954.

Frank Lloyd Wright, 1867-1959, was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, American architect of all-time. According to Wikipedia Wright designed over 1,000 projects which resulted in over 500 completed works, of which nearly 300 still stood as of 2005. The “Small House” article featured in Ladies’ Home Journal above came during the early part of his “Prairie House” period.
Today in 1862 – Birth of Connie Mack

Happy Birthday to Cornelius McGillicuddy, whose plaque in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York refers to by the more familiar name of Connie Mack.
A catcher in the 19th century, Mack, of course, is best known as the manager of the Philidelphia Athletics from the formation of the American League in 1901 [...]
Today in 1913 – Publication of the First Modern Crossword Puzzle
Cliff Aliperti | December 21st, 2008 | Magazines, Today's Date | No Comments »
The Crossword Puzzle is a very good reason to be sure to page through entire issues of vintage magazine back issues or even classic old newspapers before purchase. Along with coupon-clipping, the Crossword is one of the more common ways that old publications can be damaged on the inside.
Welcome to my brand new site about vintage collectibles. We’re going to talk about various trading and tobacco cards, ephemera items and old magazine back issues here with the subject matter concentrating on early film stars but not limited to them.
In fact, while many of the items offered for sale by VintageMeld.com are movie cards [...]
