1936 5-1/2" X 6-1/2" Studio Paper
Premiums
Here's another grouping of premiums or supplements that
I've only seen the single time I've acquired them. There's nothing to ID
these except for each actors' name at the bottom left and studio at the bottom
right inside the portrait. Each one of these measures 5-1/2" X 6-1/2" with
the black & white portrait inside the thick white borders measuring 4" X 5".
The paper is about the same stock as a magazine cover. The backs are
blank.
I'm calling them premiums based on the lack of information.
My gut tells me that they were likely a giveaway with a product or perhaps
something sold to fans directly by one of the studios. They could just
as easily be a supplement to some publication though.
The date is a guestimate based mostly on Cagney's moustache --
I'm aware of him sporting one in both He Was Her Man (1934) and
Torrid Zone (1940) and Stanwyck being listed with M.G.M. where her first
credit is His Brother's Wife (1936) (thanks to the
IMDb for the detailed information regarding
film credits) plus the somewhat youthful appearances of stars such as Gable,
Cooper, and Powell, who I believe would all look a little older by 1940.
Going by this cross-section of dates and appearance, 1936 appears to be the
earliest possible date.
I picked up ten of these, all of which are pictured below.
I'm sure there are probably more.
