I am pretty sure that these premiums are the items given the notation "R95" by Jefferson Burdick in his classic "The American Card Catalog." R95 is found on page 113 of the 1960 edition and are described as "R95--Movie Stars, 8 x 10 linen finish, several series." They are placed under Section 19, Candy and Gum Cards Issues 1933-1942, which is consistent with the date and possibly offering insight as to the origin of these premiums.
As of my last update this page now contains images of 178 different R95 Premiums plus reference to another 43, bringing the total number of known R95 Premiums to 221. This includes a couple which feature the same star in different poses and a few others which feature the same photo of the same star with mention of a different film. This is all noted below.
Update: October 14, 2007 - I was recently contacted by someone who had discovered a batch of these Linen Photos when sorting through his grandmother's extensive collection of Hollywood collectibles. The e-mailer, Eric, was actually looking for information about this issue himself, however he inadvertently may have helped us all out a little when he mentioned that his grandmother had acquired these popular premiums from the New York Sunday Mirror -- he was also kind enough to donate the image of the envelope to the right in which he had found these linens. Thanks again, Eric!
Update: July 21, 2008 - Some time ago I was contacted by Daniel, who has provided us with a lot more information about the R95 premiums! Daniel, who collects these, sent along the images appearing immediately below of a 12-page publication titled, The Movie Fan, dated 1936, which contains an advertisement for an album intended specifically to house these linen premiums, as well as a checklist of the 88 linen photos issued 8 per month between September 1935 and July 1936. I've included the check list here, above the gallery of photos, which is now so large your page may take a little time to load anyway! Thanks again, Daniel!
