WHAT'S UP: Welcome back, and first off let me apologize because this issue is about a day late. I ended up with a late invitation Friday night which cost me my self-imposed deadline and a day's worth of auction listings.
AUCTIONS: March was a strong month for sales, I was especially successful with late 1930's issues of Saturday Evening Post. There are a few more of those to come plus several earlier issues from the 10's and a few later issues from the 40's.
I'm going to try and list quite a few new items this week, the goal is new inventory for each of the five weekdays (those would be auctions ending April 10-14) as I'll probably be doing numerous relists the following week in order to concentrate on finishing my income taxes.
This issue actually features a Dealer's Tip, pointing you to a couple of really good sources of tax information. The complete Table of Contents were given for one title which does not have this information available on Amazon.com.
I had a very interesting donation of information that I included as part of my movie site, things-and-other-stuff.com, but could have just as easily included on collecting-old-magazines.com instead. There's an excellent online movie group that I'm a member of at alt.movies.silent, which sends out a daily e-mail compiling all of that days posts. Honestly I never find the time to post over there, but love reading through the postings over my morning coffee, so I'm more of a lurker I guess. Anyway, there was an item that caught my eye so I took up the poster on his offer to write him directly for more details.
I'm proud to offer The Complete New Yorker Film Review Index, compiled by and offered from Jason Liller. The index, running alphabetical by film title, is a listing of every movie reviewed in The New Yorker from their first issue, February 25, 1925 through the end of the decade, December 28, 1929. Jason's list gives the issue date and page number for each title reviewed. I placed Jason's index on my movie site because I thought it would be a great aid to film researchers who are trying to track down information on a particular title. I will ad a prominent link to the page on collecting-old-magazines.com page for The New Yorker...once I create that particular page.
BLOGGING: My blog doesn't receive the traffic that I'd like to see it receive, but I'm aware that that's mostly my own fault -- most of the content is quick summaries of a particular evening's listings on eBay. I try to give a little more info than the listings themselves provide, but this still isn't exciting reading. Once in awhile when I get excited about something I'll post a sort of mini-article over there. This occurred once last week, on an evening that I was listing issues of Time Magazine from 1955 for sale and came across something I found interesting. My original post is still on the blog, but I've rewritten it here a little more coherently and will likely move this mini-article to its own page of collecting-old-magazines.com soon enough.
Note: The entire article appeared in this space in the version mailed to subscribers.
Note: The entire Random Issue would appear in this space in the version mailed to subscribers.
... That mini-profile made me want to take on an early issue of The New Yorker...but I'm not making any promises this time. My only promise is that next issue Random Issues will be about an issue of a magazine that I actually enjoyed spending my time with!
That's it for now -- if you're a collector, finishing or otherwise, please be sure to check my auctions, especially those I list beginning on Monday. If you're a dealer daring to do your own taxes and don't have both of those books that I mentioned then you should be sure to check each of them out. For those interested in hearing me ramble on a little more be sure to check the blog for several weekly updates and if you like older movies sign up to receive The Movie Profiles and Premiums Newsletter which is sent out on the 15th of each month. Otherwise I'll be looking forward to writing you again at the end of the month, April 30 to be exact. Til then, take care!
