A Step-by-Step Guide How to Properly Frame Vintage Prints from Burr McIntosh Monthly
I've been selling loose prints from otherwise damaged issues of Burr McIntosh Monthly for some time now. One day I sat down and did some research, which took me over several sites, to try and figure out how to properly matte and frame these beautiful prints. As I put the information together I slowly purchased all of the proper ingredients to create both an attractive and archivally correct display. You're more than welcome to take these steps and use them yourself, or if you'd rather save yourself a little time I'll soon be offering a wide assortment of vintage Burr McIntosh prints for sale in my stores. This page was created as both a how-to guide if you want to do it yourself, and a how-I-did-it guide if you'd prefer to take the simpler step and purchase a framed piece from me.
1. An issue of Burr McIntosh Monthly, in this case, the July 1907 issue.
2. I've chosen this issue because it was damaged. See the little piece of paper hanging in the gutter? Someone tore out a print.
3. So let's break it apart. Start by cutting the string which binds the issue.
4. Remove the body of issue from the covers.
5. Actually there's a little more holding the pages together than that string.
6. Staple pried loose and carefully removed from the binding.
7. Pages now loose.
8. Ingredient #1 - Lineco Self-Adhesive Archival Quality Linen Hanging Tape
9. Ingredient #2 - Lineco Gummed Archival Quality Japanese Hinging Paper

Ingredients #3 and 4 - A light blue matte board with plain white backing board. Both 11" X 17" and acid free.
11. Using the Linen Hanging Tape to adhere to backing board to the matte board at the uppermost joint.

Ingredient #5 - The print I've selected from the January 1907 issue. In this case Alla Nazimova.
13. A T-Hinge made from the Japanese Hinging Paper plus water.

Ingredient #6 - I've selected a black frame for this particular matted print. Glass frame.
16. Picture hanger attached to back of frame.
17. Finished product. In this case a 6" X 12" vintage 1907 Alla Nazimova print, matted with a 6" X 10-1/2" opening with bevelled edge inside an 11" X 17" matte, which sits inside a glass frame with outside dimensions of 13-1/2" X 19-1/4".
