Movie Profiles & Premiums Volume
3, Number 5.
January 31, 2005
Brought to you by things-and-other-stuff
FIRST REEL:
Well that was a quick couple of weeks, welcome back! I
had been working on this newsletter throughout the afternoon at a relaxing pace
and then took a break for a little while to have dinner and watch a little TV
when about 8:30 I began receiving weird emails that notified me of strange
goings-on with my eBay account. This is a first for me, but apparently
somebody hi-jacked the things-and-other-stuff seller account for a little while
this evening, changed my password, and listed a couple of strange doll auctions
starting at a buck apiece (they must have been good dolls, bidding already
topped $100 by the time they were shut down).
Anyway, I initiated an eBay live chat session
and within ten minutes they had helped me regain my account, change my password
and cancel the doll auctions, all without disturbing my regular sales. I
have to say, as unhelpful as it is e-mailing regular support at eBay, the live
chat service is extremely helpful and very quick to solve your problems.
This is the second time I've used this service and it is definitely the way to
go when you have any type of serious problem with your eBay account.
So I spent the rest of the evening changing
my other passwords (e-mail, PayPal, Marketworks, etc.), and then discovered that
my auctions, which I launch through Marketworks, were not launching. I had
forgotten to validate my new eBay password. So next I had to take care of
that, then relaunch my planned auctions, then it was over to PayPal to validate
my eBay account through them. On top of all of that leg work my paranoia
has led to me holding a list in front of me of about eight new passwords, all of
which will be absolutely impossible to remember. Truly a nightmare night
for the online entrepreneur, but then again I've lost no money only time so it
turned out about as well as it could have under the circumstances.
By the way, if you're bidding or watching my
auctions all of this behind the scenes action will have absolutely no effect on
you. I've already had a batch of 30+ auctions end this evening after
straightening this all out.
Sorry if that bored you, it just happened
though and I felt the need to share. Enough's enough though, please allow
me to return to our regular events and open up the program for you all:

7. The Silent Collection featuring Jane Novak by Tammy Stone
I hope you all enjoyed the surprise of our new Crossword
feature last issue. If you've been toying around with the January Babies
puzzle for the past couple of weeks the solution is now available online for
you. We add the very interesting George Raft to our grouping of profiles
this month, Raft is examined by regular contributor Susan M. Kelly.
Stephen Schochet tells us some Tales of the Broke and Famous in his Hollywood
Stories this month, including some interesting anecdotes involving John Wayne,
Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland. Tammy Stone then dips a little further
into the Silent Star canon and delivers a profile of Jane Novak as her entry to
The Silent Collection.
Items of interest up for sale on eBay this
week include a number of smaller fan photos and studio postcards from the 1940's
and 50's. There are a few 1930's dixie lids that I listed tonight for the
first time (including Ken Maynard, Joe E. Brown, Loretta Young and a few
others). Also tonight are some high-grade NM-MT (9/10) 1940 Sherman's
Pools paper cards/prmiums. These are beauties with especially vibrant
colors. I'm going to try and get a batch of 40 or so of the MAR-VA theatre
programs listed this week, the batch I've pulled aside are from 1949-50.
I'm also preparing a number of stills for listing including many Jane Russell
items, several major 1950's and 60's stars, and by next week about a dozen and a
half Mary Pickford photos.
Here are my up to the minute active auctions:
All eBay Auctions
I tinkered with the home page a little and
grouped many of the basic links on the site in the far right column. I've
also composed a "Tour" page
which opens with an updated version of the
"About Us" page and follows with a brand new
page entitled "What We
Sell." The
"What We Sell" page is intended to clear up
some of the differences between some of the items available here, for example
Fan Photos vs. Still Photos vs. Premium Photos. I've included labeled
examples of many items as well. If you haven't checked them out, all of
those pages are worth a read as I kind of consider them important in the way of
getting to know me and getting to know my items. Please have a look when
time permits.
As usual, the
Catalog
carries many additions, please have a look at your convenience.
To the time tunnel we go!

George
Raft
By Susan M. Kelly
In a string of movies during the 30’s and 40’s, George Raft became the
quintessential Hollywood tough guy, bringing an air of gritty realism to his
gangster roles. Raft actually played the part so well that he managed to carry
the gangster image into his off-screen life, a fact that did little to help his
career.

Hollywood Stories:
Tales of the Broke and Famous
By Stephen Schochet
If the rumors are true that Michael Jackson's lavish life style has left him
broke, he would not be the first famous celebrity in financial straights. John
Wayne found himself in hock after 150 movies. Three wives, seven children,
investing his own money in the box office troubled The Alamo (1960) combined
with an exceedingly generous nature left the Duke completely wiped out.

The Silent Collection by Tammy Stone
Jane Novak
Making 86 films throughout the course of her career, Jane Novak reached her
pinnacle of fame in the 1910’s and, like the Talmadge and Gish sisters, belonged
to a family of acting siblings. Sister Eva, though, who was younger than Jane,
never quite made it as big as her sister, who was in the paradoxical situation
of being loved for her delicate, vulnerable blonde good looks as well as her
image as an athletic, outdoorsy type. An actress for all seasons?

End Credits:
And so goes another issue. Next time around, I hope to have some Academy
Award predictions for you from an experienced outside source, along with my own
picks. I know we're not big on current events here, but we're all film
fans so I'm sure the picks will carry some relevance for you, hey maybe even
help you win an office pool or something! As always, Tammy Stone will be
back in that February 15 issue, and I'll be back as well hopefully without any
fun stories to tell like I did at the top of this issue. Take care 'til
then!
