Movie Profiles & Premiums Volume
3, Number 1.
November 15, 2004
Brought to you by things-and-other-stuff
FIRST REEL:
Welcome to Volume 3, Issue Number 1, the start of our third
year together! We've changed the title of the newsletter to "Movie
Profiles & Premiums" in order to more accurately describe the contents.
The "ASTOS" name may still crop up on the Topica site and e-mailed newsletters,
however I'm going to see what I can do to change that. This newsletter has
long ago dropped its hodgepodge references to baseball and wrestling to
concentrate solely on vintage Movie Stars & Collectibles, so why not revise the
name as well? For e-mail subscribers you may need to change your spam
filters to receive the newly titled newsletter, I'm not too sure how that will
work but am pretty sure that there will be different circumstances for different
subscribers.
Thanks to all for subscribing and feel free
to forward us to your friends with the suggestion that they do too!
Beginning this issue, I've added Topica subscription boxes to all of the
profiles pages on the site with the hope of attracting new subscribers who find
the site through Internet searches. I'll probably go back and add them to
all of the existing profiles as well. I also want to lead off by thanking
all of the writers who have ever submitted their work to this newsletter,
without you guys this would just be an irregular auction bulletin!
The three writers found in this issue are
pretty appropriate representatives of the first two years of the newsletter.
This is Susan M. Kelly's 5th piece published with us (with many more on file to
come!), Stephen Schochet's 20th installment of Hollywood stories, and Tammy
Stone's 36th. By the way, we've had a grand total of 36 issues, so yep,
Tammy's been in every single one beginning with a profile on
Vivien
Leigh back in Volume 1, Number 1, and every entry after that first
one has been part of her Silent Collection! Thanks guys!
Let's see, now that I've given a sincere pat
on the back to our writers, subscribers, and I guess even myself through mention
of the newsletter itself, I should tone things down and open up the program for
you all:
Opening credits...
1. Adolphe Menjou by Susan M. Kelly
2. Photo ID Guide: 1923 Neilson's Chocolates Trading Cards
3. Hollywood Stories: Celebrities and Their Images by Stephen Schochet
4. Photo ID Guide: 1934 Write Movie Star's Name Here Trading Cards
5. The Silent Collection featuring Harry Langdon by Tammy Stone
As for the collectibles circuit, we have ten beautiful
stills and press photos featuring Carole Lombard ending tonight (November 17) on
eBay. If you're a fan you should really check them out. We've
relisted many trading and tobacco cards at discounted opening bids beginning
tonight (I guess last night is more accurate, November 16). I'm expecting
a delivery of over 250 theatre programs from the 1940's-60's that I'll probably
list either later this week or the start of next week so that they don't end
over the Thanksgiving holiday (I don't want those of you traveling to miss
out!).

As usual, the
Catalog
carries many additions, please have a look at your convenience.
I wouldn't mind being able to publish a Top 5 or even Top
10 all-time Christmas movies list next issue if possible. Anyone who feels
like submitting one, please feel free to send it along to
things@things-and-other-stuff.com
(I
know you like these Scott!).
And now, to the time tunnel we go!

ADOLPHE MENJOU
By Susan M. Kelly
A cultured air, a sophisticated sounding name and an
impeccable sense of style were all the building blocks Adolphe Menjou needed for
the greatest role of his life - as Hollywood’s penultimate Beau Brummell. It
was a role he would play with panache and flair to his dying day.

Hollywood Stories:
Celebrities and Their Images
By Stephen Schochet
How a star appears to the public often involves
careful planning which can sometimes backfire. Pop Star Michael Jackson
enjoyed the public image of being a Peter Pan like eccentric. He would
personally leak crazy stories to the tabloids.

Stephen Schochet
is the author and narrator of the audiobooks Fascinating Walt Disney and Tales
Of Hollywood. The Saint Louis Post Dispatch says,” these two elaborate
productions are exceptionally entertaining.” Hear RealAudio samples of these

The Silent Collection by Tammy Stone
Harry
Langdon
As always seems to be the
case with these biographies, I start by saying that it’s tragic the stars of
cinema’s Golden Era have not been given duly remembered. Harry Langdon has
remained far more obscure than his contemporaries despite his enormous success
during his heyday. Often called Baby Face, Harry is not remembered the way
Charlie Chaplin is. Looking at their respective films, there is an undeniable
genius in Chaplin’s work – as there was in Buster Keaton’s – that is not as
consistently prevalent in Harry’s.

column with pictures!

Time to wrap up now, it's just after 2am EST, and I'm getting
a little bleary-eyed. I still have to publish all of these updated links
to the site and then post it all once again over at Topica. Hopefully this
means your newsletter shows up in your mailbox by about 2:30-3am. If so,
good morning! Everyone have a great Thanksgiving, hope your travels all go
smooth and your turkey tastes great. See you next time, November 30th!
As always feel free to e-mail any thoughts or ideas
to us at
things@things-and-other-stuff.com, we're always
willing to listen.
