ASTOS Volume 2, Number 9. April 15, 2004
All-Star things-and-other-stuff
Brought to you by things-and-other-stuff
WARM-UPS:
Hope you all had a Happy Tax Day and weren't scambling at the
last minute like certain newsletter editors found themselves doing. At
least it's over for another year. If any of you do your own taxes online
I'd like to recommend
http://www.completetax.com for you to use next
year. It's the second year in a row that I used them and it is a very
simple and inexpensive system. In fact next year I probably won't wait
until the last minute just because I know this site eases the nightmare quite a
bit.
I regret to inform you that Ken's Comedy Corner will no
longer be appearing in the newsletter. Comedy Corner author Ken Lashway is
very busy in his private life and will no longer be able to contribute.
Hopefully he has time to read this because I wanted to publicly thank him for
his great work the past few months. Best of luck, Ken!
But on the bright side, Tammy Stone is back, this time
putting Billie Dove into her Silent Collection. Be sure not to miss
Tammy's piece in its usual slot at the end of the newsletter, it's very
interesting! I'm also pleased to announce the debut of two new writers
this issue: Jessica Hutchison profiles Humphrey Bogart, one of the top notch
legends who had been absent from our pages until now. Can't believe it
took 27 issues to get to Bogie, gee whiz! Then M.J. Goodner, author of the
science-fiction novel Nargasaan Prophecy from Lulu Press, debuts with a look at
funny-man Danny Kaye. We're hoping to see more work from both Jessica and
M.J. in the future. Stephen Schochet also returns with two new Hollywood
Stories.
As promised we also return with two Photo ID Guides for
you. Actually the second of these is a revised look at the 1934 Lux Toilet
Soap 9X12 Studio Portraits. We have added several more examples of these
70 year old premiums as well as an image of the envelope which they were issued
in. The lead-off Photo ID Guide, Various Trading Card Sets, is actually
several ID Guides in one. We have just purchased a large collection of
high-grade trading cards from the 20's through the 40's and will be auctioning
these in individual lots on eBay. We are tentatively scheduling the
listings to appear from May 26-June 2 to coincide with our taking the business
full-time. I say tentatively because the goal is to list an image of each
of the 225+ cards, both front and back, as a way to preview this great auction.
For the next several issues this auction will be taking over the Photo ID
Guide's as we add a few pages to the site every so often. Enjoy!
Here's what's featured in this all new issue:
1. Hollywood Stories: Star Maps by Stephen Schochet
2. Humphrey Bogart by Jessica Hutchison
3. Photo ID Guide: Various Trading Card Sets
4. Danny Kaye by M.J. Goodner
5. Hollywood Stories: Wild Casting by Stephen Schochet
6. Photo ID Guide: 1934 Lux Toilet Soap 9X12 Studio Portraits
7. The Silent Collection featuring Billie Dove by Tammy Stone
We have
eBay auctions up and running right now
featuring the featured 1934 Lux Toilet Soap premiums, plus many of our promo and
real photographs at lower opening bids.
As usual, the
Catalog
carries many additions, please have a look at your convenience.
Please also take a look at our
home page for ways you
can contribute to this newsletter and our site even if you are not a collector.
Just scroll down about halfway and have a look on the left. We thank you
for your assistance.
We have had several new subscribers since
our last issue so I wanted to once again run down and link to all of the new forms and
features that were added to the site prior to our last issue. If you sell on
eBay please feel free to advertise your eBay ID on our site. Click
HERE
for details on how you can take advantage of this free feature! If
you have a web site and want to swap links we've also set things up to make that
a simpler process. Click
HERE to exchange links with
things-and-other-stuff.com. Finally, if you have some items to sell, and
they don't even have to be movie related, click
HERE
to visit our consignment terms. We will be accepting consignments as
of June 1st when this business goes full time. There will soon be a form
available to either e-mail or print and submit with your lots.
To the time tunnel we go!

Hollywood Stories:
Star Maps
By Stephen Schochet
Since movie stars have moved into the big mansions of Beverly Hills and Bel-Air,
vendors have sold maps of their homes with varying accuracy. Although most stars
resent unwanted intrusions of fans, many take it with good humor. Sitting in his
swimming pool, Oliver Hardy would welcome fans who climbed over his fence. “Hey,
How about a dip?”

HUMPHREY BOGART
By Jessica Hutchison
Humphrey Bogart may be
remembered best for his roles in Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon
and The African Queen, but the events in his life that helped create the
endearing rugged sentimentality of his characters are often just as interesting.

DANNY KAYE
By M.J. Goodner
Danny Kaye was more than
just a movie star; he was an entertainer in every sense of the word. With
talents that ranged from comedic improvisation, dancing, singing, musical
composition, and a unique and often hilarious ability to recite complicated
verse without so much as a hitch, it’s no wonder that he went on to become one
of the greatest American entertainers of all time.

Hollywood Stories:
Wild Casting
By Stephen Schochet
Can you imagine Doris Day as Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate (1967)? That’s who
producer Joseph E. Levine wanted before Miss Day turned it down thinking the
part in bad taste, and it went to Anne Bancroft. How about James Cagney as Robin
Hood in 1938?

The Silent Collection by Tammy Stone
Billie
Dove
Before there was American Beauty - the smash 1999 Kevin Spacey/Thora
Birch/Mena Suvari hit that bowled audiences the world over and made red roses
the symbol for sensuality all over again - there was the 1927 film that
transformed silent film star Billie Dove into the legendary diva she is
remembered as today. Billie Dove may not be the starlet that rolls fastest off
people's tongues today, but at her peak, she was the box office draw to beat -
and several of our most famous icons, from Colleen Moore and Clara Bow to Gloria
Swanson and Greta Garbo - couldn't come near her.

column with pictures!
