Brought to you by things-and-other-stuff
WARM-UPS:
Welcome ASTOS subscribers, new and old to our thirteenth
issue! If you collect
movie items please don't forget to visit our
eBay listings where right now you'll find some
1930's Tobacco Premiums of some of the top stars (Gable, Lombard, Barrymore,
Powell, etc.) plus some original double-weight linen 8x10" photographs from the
1920's. Great stuff,
take a look!
More photos and some original stills to come in the coming
weeks, but first up as soon as we can scan them all are more of the popular
linen premium photos from the 1936 period. If you're not sure which ones I
am talking about we have offered these for sale previously and remainders from
those offerings can be found by clicking
HERE.
The Silent Collection features one of my favorites, The
Girl Who Was Too Beautiful, Barbara La Marr. Barbara was one of
Hollywood's earliest tragedies, Tammy Stone takes a look at one of our more
curious stars of the teens and twenties with Ms. La Marr. Penny Deutsch
who most recently entertained us with her tale of
Marlene Dietrich is back to tell us of the most famed Tarzan, Johnny
Weissmuller. The tale of Weissmuller can perhaps help wean our former
sports subscribers off of their ASTOS baseball fix, they should know what I
mean.
Be sure to follow the link towards the end of the
newsletter for details on your special shipping savings, good for ASTOS
subscribers only. I put it here last issue, so again I wanted to give a
little push to our
Classified Advertising
page. All ads are free and the ground rules are pretty simple, so whether
you're buying or selling, send us your ad(s) today! And if you're just
shopping there are four brand new ads since the last issue so take a look.
Enough for now, to the time tunnel we go!

The Silent Collection by Tammy Stone
BARBARA LA MARR
In a bizarre twist to the adage that one can’t be too rich or
too thin, it seems one can be too beautiful. Known around the world in her day
as “The Girl Who Is Too Beautiful”, Barbara LaMarr, in her short life, created a
body of work that would truly immortalize her. As ethereal as she appeared on
the screen, her many admirers pointed repeatedly to her intelligence,
compassion, humour and her exceptional beauty off screen as well.
This is just a teaser--check out
Tammy's entire
column with pictures!

regular column on the greats of the Silent Screen here in ASTOS twice monthly.
Tammy invites you to write her at

INTERMISSION:
It's a separate hobby from what most of us
collect, but when
ink blotters feature advertisements depicting
film actresses they become items of interest. We have recently purchased,
broken, and sold several singles from sample sets of
blotters featuring silent film actresses.
Take a look at some of them and enjoy!

JOHNNY WEISSMULLER
by Penny Deutsch
Born in Freidorf, Hungary in 1904,
Peter Janos Weissmuller’s family immigrated to the United States in 1907, where
he grew up in the southwestern Pennsylvania town of Windber. He dropped out of
school in the eighth grade, shortly before the death of his father, who was a
brew master, and learned to swim at about age 9 in the city's public pools and
in Lake Michigan. From August 1921, when as a 17- year-old he broke his first
world record, until he turned professional in January 1929, he set and reset
world and national freestyle records for distances from 50 yards to a half mile.
This is just a teaser--check out
Penny's entire article with pictures!
