ASTOS Volume 1, Number 11. April 15, 2003
All-Star things-and-other-stuff
Brought to you by things-and-other-stuff
WARM-UPS:
Welcome to the new ASTOS, hopefully a more compact trip to
the old-time movies for those of you who wish to visit. We continue to
offer what we consider a very original collectible of movie collectibles (not
memorabilia) honoring the legends from the days of silent film right up through
the legends of World War II and into the early 1950's. Along with those
fascinating collectibles we wish to entertain you with the stories of these
often fascinating stars. Pearl White and Leslie Howard prove to follow the
rule rather than act as any type of exception, that's for sure!
Tammy Stone grabs you from the get-go as we visit yet
another selection from her Silent Collection. In fact, we'll go so far as
to state that if you don't finish her Pearl White article than you're not
subscribing to this newsletter for the articles, because this is one of the best
we've had! But don't stop reading there, Karen Costanzi is back and her
timing is perfect as she brings us the interesting tale of Leslie Howard: Actor
& Patriot. Two excellent articles for your enjoyment, two articles that we
are proud to have carry this special issue of ASTOS, as mentioned our first
issue dedicated solely to film and film stars!
Don't forget to click on the feature in our Intermission,
pretty cool stuff that if you are reading this right away you may be able to
steal for a song off eBay. Speaking of eBay, if you visit our
things-and-other-stuff listings this week you will definitely encounter several
5x7 inch fan photos from the 1920's and 30's. These always prove popular.
They are already scanned and just about ready to be listed (probably will have
them up by late April 16). Some other fun stuff to appear by the weekend,
and more MJ Moriarty Playing Cards to be listed within the week or so.
Enough for now, to the time tunnel we go!

The Silent Collection by Tammy Stone
PEARL WHITE
I must preface this entry with a sorry statement:
everything you are about to read here is a lie. Okay, that might be an
exaggeration, but Pearl White is not only one of the more obscure of the silent
film stars, she was also a notorious fibber! Known for her whimsical, grandiose
whoppers, financial prowess and inventive mythmaking, the movie rags knew to
take her stories with a grain of salt after catching her in lie after lie. Not
that this took away from her charm, relative popularity, or diva-like stature.
Quite the opposite – not unlike today, scandals a movie star make! So sit back
and enjoy the (possibly all untrue) life story of silent serial queen Ms. Pearl
White.
This is just a teaser--check out
Tammy's entire
column with pictures!

INTERMISSION:
We will try to return this section to a regular feature
on oddball collectible items. Submissions are welcome, but otherwise there
will be a link to a photo essay type feature. This time around we have a
very cool grouping of
seven inch tall standees featuring the legendary stars of
the 1930's. Links follow to our catalog listings, but these
Standees are
available on eBay at special low opening bids
through the evening of Thursday, April 17. Enjoy!

LESLIE HOWARD: ACTOR & PATRIOT
by Karen Costanzi
Mainly remembered for his
sensitive portrayal of Ashley Wilkes in Gone with the Wind, Leslie Howard
was a man who lived his beliefs. He was born Leslie Howard Stainer in London on
April 3, 1893 in London and died in early June 1943 in the Bay of Biscayne,
Spain.
His role in Gone with
the Wind followed a distinguished career as a stage and movie actor. He was
well known for his roles in plays and movies on both sides of the Atlantic.
This is just a teaser--check out
Karen's
entire article with pictures!
