WARM-UPS:
Been very busy buying lately, so look for some really cool stuff to crop up on eBay in the coming weeks.  Right now we have 20 issues of Harper's Weekly, most from 1864 a few from 1862 featuring plenty of artwork by Thomas Nast including Abraham Lincoln, plus covers featuring Generals Grant, Sherman, and McClellan, artwork featuring General Custer.  A total trip back into history!  Those went up a night or two ago and are scheduled for seven days on eBay.

Other new items not listed yet, but soon to be available either on eBay or in our catalog include: a small collection of Joe DiMaggio original wire photos, 1936 R311 Premiums featuring many Hall of Famers including Jimmie Foxx and Rogers Hornsby, a large collection (200+) of Sports Illustrated from the 1970's to be sold issue by issue on eBay.  Movie items include 20 or so 1930's Standees (these are neat!), more 1936 Black Frame 9x12 Premium Photos, and a wide selection of movie collectibles from Cuba covering the 1910's right through to the 1950's.  Oh, almost forgot the 1930's and 40's Mutoscope and other other Arcade cards of Actors and Actresses.  Some movie stills from the period too if we find the time to get them up.  Needless to say, it's going to be a busy time.  Lots of scanning!

We've also bought some new domain names since last time.  http://www.thingsandotherstuff.com brings you to the main sites home page, so we can now forgive you if you do "forget the dashes."  Also bought http://www.moviepremiums.com and pointed it to our TIAS site.  Picked that one up mainly out of surprise that it wasn't already taken.

Another issue of familiar personalities covered by what are now becoming our more familiar writers.  Our New Zealand writer, Chantel Theunissen, returns with a look at one of our biggest stars, Carole Lombard (check that one out on the web site if you can--it's loaded with photos of Lombard collectibles!), and leading things off Tammy Stone adds Francis X. Bushman to her Silent Collection.

Enough for now, to the time tunnel we go!

The Silent Collection by Tammy Stone
FRANCIS X. BUSHMAN

Remember when movies were still called photo-plays? Photo-play, literally meaning “play of light”, referred to what was considered, at the turn of the last century, an amazing new phenomenon: of cameras being able to capture, and then, with the help of a projector, transmit light and shadow onto a screen. We take it all for granted now, but in the early, heady days of cinema, audiences were shocked by the first worlds constructed out of light and shadow alone. It was magic. Stars, of course, added another magical element to the movies, and king among them was Francis X. Bushman, known at the peak of his fame as … you guessed it, “The King of Photo-play.”

CAROLE LOMBARD
by Chantel Theunissen

Carole Lombard was born Alice Jane Peters on October 6, 1908, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The daughter of Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ Knight and Frederick C. Peters, she was always different than the other girls. While others her age were playing dress up, the future star preferred to rough it with her two older brothers on the football field. Her love of performing seems to have been there from the start.

This is just a teaser--check out
Chantel's entire article with pictures!

END CREDITS:
Well, that just about wraps what I would call another great issue of ASTOS.  We're still setting up the next issue, but I can promise something on Fay Wray in that one.  Don't forget if you want to buy the classic movies on VHS video, please check out our offerings on  things-and-other-stuff at Half.com
