WARM-UPS:
Our Highlights shop is now officially off Ruby Lane and should appear live on
TIAS sometime over the weekend. I tell you, just when you think you get
settled down in this fast-paced online business world, changes are forced upon
you. Of course these are always changes for the positive and changes for
advancement, but man it gets you tired (it's just after 2AM as I write these
words!)
We've rearranged things a little beginning with this issue. Instead of
alternating the movie and sport articles we've grouped them together, so now you
can find the movie articles towards the start of the newsletter and the sports
articles towards the end. I do realize that there are many of you which
prefer one over the other, or don't even bother with the other as well.
This will probably lead to a split into two newsletters sometime in the future,
but let's not get ahead of ourselves here (more changes, more work!).
Tammy Stone's Silent Collection will be our lead-off piece from now on to be
followed by the accompanying movie piece. This month we really deal with
some legends of the silent screen as Tammy tells us of one of my favorites,
Clara Bow, and newcomer to ASTOS Kendahl Cruver takes on the most famous of the
vamps, Theda Bara. I'm sure that I'm not alone when I say that as a young
boy it was these two women (Theda and Clara, not Tammy and Kendahl, though
they're both very nice!) that captivated my imagination and led to my love of
older film. Very simply my mind computed Vamp=Theda, It=Clara. I'm
happy to be able to present articles on both of them at the same time, and both
from excellent writers at that!
...
Enough for now, let's go back to the old days!

The Silent Collection by Tammy Stone
CLARA BOW
There are some actresses who are adored by critics
and the public alike, and some who find adulation with fans despite critical
derision. Clara Bow falls into the latter category. Virtually ignored by the
press in her day – the roaring 20s, when cinema’s silent days were approaching
the highest levels of artistic achievement – Clara was the greatest sensation
for legions of admirers.

FIRST INTERLUDE:
This months interlude is a shameless advertisement for
things-and-other-stuff at Half.com. We're
trying to stick to the classics and have 66 VHS videos listed at this time.
Each video is graded as conservatively as anything else that
things-and-other-stuff offers and packed just as carefully for shipment to you.
We're actively buying videos at this time, trying hard not to stray too far from
the types of material you read about and shop for here, but occasionally adding
higher quality more recent films (have a crate of Oscar winners on the way right
now) and cult favorites. Have a look, but sorry no shipping break over
there (I don't have a way to circumvent their system).

THEDA BARA
by Kendahl Cruver
With her mesmerizing kohl-rimmed eyes, barely-there costumes and exotic ways,
Theda Bara became the first sex symbol of the silver screen. Though she usually
portrayed villains, she was one of the most beloved women of her time.
This is just a teaser--check out
Kendahl's
entire article with pictures!

END CREDITS:
Sorry, no featured item this issue, but I am working on one right now for
the next issue. Once I get everything scanned and do my best to find some
information on the item we'll be all set. Next issue will also include the
link to the things-and-other-stuff spotlight shop on TIAS. What follows is
the new shipping discount for subscribers, which will be permanent until further
notice. In the future this information will appear on the main site with
only a reference to it in the newsletter. Thanks so much for your support!
