Hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving and are ready for another issue of ASTOS!  If you're a newcomer this issue, don't worry, we are too!  This is only our second issue and we would love it if you told your friends about us or even forwarded this entire newsletter along to them.  Tell your writer friends too because we're still seeking submissions:

If you’re interested in submitting a piece, please check our guidelines page for details: http://www.things-and-other-stuff.com/newsletter_general_guidelines.htm

Things have been picking up in the storefront these past couple of weeks with Christmas volunteered by a few customers as the reason behind a couple of larger purchases.  Both the shopping days and the shipping days remaining are narrowing down, so if you're looking for a collectible gift for someone, please e-mail us soon: things@things-and-other-stuff.com

Recent arrivals to the things-and-other-stuff storefront include a fresh set of 1916 MJ Moriarty Playing Cards--these cards feature all of the biggest Hollywood stars from this early movie era.  We've done very well breaking a deck of these cards before and those cards only averaged about G-VG condition.  They are actually featured this month.  This batch is in the VG-EX to EX+ range, very nice, most without creases!  For the baseball collector we have been slowly adding to our collection of mid to high grade baseball cards from the 1950's-1960's.  None of these new additions have been featured at auction on eBay as of yet, so you may be the first to take a look!  For our wrestling collecting friends if you've been following our auctions you now there's been a steady supply of magazines being listed recently (there are probably a few on eBay right now!).  If you haven't been following the auctions, then you can take a look at the leftovers in our shop.  The direct address for the things-and-other-stuff catalog is http://www.auctionworks.com/awstore/things-and-other-stuff.

Onto the articles:

This issue features the inaugural article by Tammy Stone for her brand new column "The Silent Collection."  Those who received the first issue of ASTOS a couple of weeks back may recall Tammy as the author of the excellent piece on Vivien Leigh.  Well, Tammy kept on submitting and when I assigned her a couple of older names her turn-around time was incredible as was the work, so we decided to go in this direction.  Hope you enjoy her Norma Talmadge piece which is the last of our three features and appears near the bottom of this page (along with this weeks coupon as well!).

Leading off we have a new writer to ASTOS, Cynthia Potts.  Cynthia brings us a great piece on film legend Gary Cooper which brings a great Ernest Hemingway angle to the story.  Enjoy, we hope to have more from Cynthia in the future!

GARY COOPER
by Cynthia Potts

Everybody knows the song.  Once Fred Astaire starts singing “Putting on the Ritz, people will chime in, claiming that they too want to ‘look like Gary Cooper’.  Implicit in that statement is an almost universal desire to possess Cooper’s quiet style and elegance.

This is just a teaser--check out Cynthia's entire article with pictures!

FIRST INTERLUDE: For those of you who monitor our sales we have some great stuff coming in the next few weeks for all of your collections!  Expect a large array of 1920's Movie Star Strip Cards which are for the most part in great shape and have been very neatly cut from their strips.  There are a few available right now, for a preview follow the Norma Talmadge links in this issue.  We're expecting some large 1940's Baseball Premiums from the classic Baseball Magazine--stars wills include Ted Williams and Jimmie Foxx plus several others!  And for you grapplers out there we've just put in the order for over 50 wrestling magazines of all titles from the early 1980's--these could fill out your collections nicely as we usually tend to offer magazines a little later from the 1984-1990 period.

The Silent Collection by Tammy Stone
NORMA TALMADGE

Sometimes it’s difficult to gauge the parameters of success. In one sense, Norma Talmadge had it all. She had the looks, and a Hollywood-style rags-to-riches story.

This is just a teaser--check out Tammy's entire column with pictures!

SECOND INTERLUDE: Featured Item this month: 1916 MJ Moriarty Playing Cards.  These cards feature movie stars of the period.  There is a Buy One, Get One special on these 85+ year old cards if you visit the page that they're featured on.  As a special treat, what started out as an explanation of why the latest set of these cards that we split differs from earlier sets evolved into an article complete with photo explanations.  So what came first, the deck with Norma & Constance Talmadge on the same card or the one where they each have their own card?
