His Girl Friday (1940)

His Girl Friday on the IMDb
Return to the Main Index

Columbia Classics.  Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell, Ralph Bellamy.  One of my all-time favorites and always a contender if you ask me about the greatest dialogue in any film of all-time.  Snappy is its best description, with Grant coming back quickly in response to anyone speaking to him, and if it happens to be Russell she's back at him just as quick -- then they go round and round leaving you overwhelmed and impressed with what you've just witnessed (That was scripted?  Oh my!).  Originally a play and first on screen as The Front Page, Howard Hawks manages to make His Girl Friday his own, no small thanks to the dominating performances of Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell.  Roz Russell's powerful performance must have been hugely inspiring at the time for women working in the male dominated work force of the day.  Restored from the original negative, this disc has both digitally mastered sound and video, which is a blessing because this one has run with some grainy prints on TV over the years.  There's a commentary that I haven't listened to yet, though I love this one enough that I one day will take the time to do so.  I also just noticed "Four Exclusive Featurettes" are listed on the case, I wasn't aware of this and will update this entry after I watch them.
