Grand Hotel (1933)

Warner Brothers.  Greta Garbo, John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, Wallace Beery, Lionel Barrymore, Lewis Stone.  The 1932 Academy Award Winner for Best Picture, this classic ensemble piece is the perfect dramatic companion to the similarly casted Dinner at Eight.  I'm going to commit a classic-movie sin here, and this is based on personal taste and nothing else, but I just can't stand Garbo in this picture.  She's gorgeous, yes, but her character whines through the entire picture and her voice really starts to grate on me.  That said, the rest of the cast is at their absolute best in this one with my particular favorite of the bunch being Lionel Barrymore as the poor dying fellow spending his life's savings at the Grand Hotel.  Wallace Beery is a perfect sleaze and helped make me even more concerned about the fortunes of Joan Crawford, who steals this flick from Garbo.  If you're unfamiliar with the picture but schooled in Bugs Bunny cartoons, this is the one where Garbo "vants to be alone."  Let her be, I say, what's Joan up to?
