Classic MovieMeld #23 – The Big Clock and More!

Consider this a MovieMeld Mini as I’m going to breeze through the TCM weekend choices tonight in order to leave time for me to do some site housekeeping this weekend. Just so I don’t totally leave you hanging I am going to include Weekend Choices as well as some movie card and collectible images for you below.

Quick explanation: The VintageMeld was born only last December 8, and I decided from the start that content came before everything else. Well, in my race to try and provide two new posts per day over the past month I discovered that writing them takes a lot of time than I originally anticipated! So features I’ve wished to implement on the VintageMeld have yet to be activated, or in some cases created, and that’s completely my fault. What I’d like to do this weekend is get a jump on a couple of the main pages of the site (About Me, for instance), begin work on my blogroll, as I have lots of really neat sites to share with you, and get a better understanding of some of the video and tagging features that I’ve yet to activate on the backend.

Oh, by the way, I say this will be my only post, but I do have plans to do two magazine collecting videos this weekend as well, so you’ll see those posted as they’re created.

The Today’s Date feature, which includes birthdays and historical happenings will return Monday morning as well.

Now, let’s open up the Now Playing Guide and see what TCM has in store for us this weekend:

Saturday, January 17
My Favorite: The Big Clock (10:00 am)
Most Likely to DVR: The Earl of Chicago (10:00 pm)
Never Saw, But Should: Movie Crazy (6:00 am)

The Big Clock (1948) is one I own on DVD.  Directed by John Farrow, if you haven’t seen it and I didn’t tell you otherwise you might find yourself looking for Hitchcock’s cameo and then be surprised that he’s missing from the credits.  Extremely well-done murder story stars Ray Milland with Charles Laughton and Mia’s other parent Maureen O’Sullivan.

The Earl of Chicago (1939) is about a reformed gangster post-prohibition played by Robert Montgomery with one of my favorite character actors, Edward Arnold (tell me his laugh doesn’t make you smile), Reginald Owen and Edmund Gwenn in the cast.  Hmm, Scrooge and Santa, together!

Movie Crazy (1932) is a Harold Lloyd talkie with Constance Cummings.

Bonus MovieMeld: Sunday, January 18
So far I’ve only highlighted a single silent film in Sunday Silents, but since we’re moving through these quick, here’s a little more for this week:
My Favorite: Only Angels Have Wings (8:00 am)
Most Likely to DVR: Arsenic and Old Lace (6:00 am)
Never Saw, But Should: The Cameraman (12:35 am)

Another one that I have on DVD, Only Angels Have Wings (1939) is a real treat from Howard Hawks with Cary Grant leading a group of fliers, including Thomas Mitchell, in South America.  Jean Arthur, stranded with the boys, is initially horrified by how cavalierly they respond to death, but soon falls for Grant and is much slower leaving than she originally planned.  Richard Barthelmess arrives a little later and handles the most complicated character in the picture, and a young Rita Hayworth is his wife.

Ooh, Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) was a movie I asked for for Christmas and nobody remembered to get it for me, now it’s on Sunday morning at 6 just before Only Angels Have Wings.  Frank Capra adapts this creepy comedy from the stage with Cary Grant in the lead, Josephine Hull and Jean Adair reprising  their spinster roles from the stage version (1941), Raymond Massey, Peter Lorre, and Priscilla Lane.  John Alexander also makes the leap from the stage version to the screen as Theodore Brewster, who has a bit of an obsession (CHARRGE!!) with Theodore Roosevelt.  I’ll either be up at 6 or shopping for it on Amazon later in the day!

The Cameraman (1928) is Sunday night’s silent feature, a very popular Buster Keaton movie wherein he plays the title character and follows around Marceline Day with his camera.  A very impressive 8.2/10 rating by visitors to the IMDb.

What are you watching this weekend?  Like I said, this was a quickie version of the MovieMeld, did I miss one of your favorites?  Have a great weekend, I’ll be back with new posts for Monday morning and hopefully some brand new features.  In the meantime, Happy Viewing!
