Edward G. Robinson, born December 12, 1893 (died 1973)
Edward G. Robinson on the IMDb.
I was just watching Edward G. Robinson the other day in one of his later roles, card sharp Lancey Howard in The Cincinnati Kid (1965) starring Steve McQueen. It says a lot about an actor that nearly 35 years after their breakout they can show up in support in a film laden with the hottest stars of a new generation—besides McQueen we have eye candy Ann-Margret and Tuesday Weld in The Cincinnati Kid—and the old man is the one you keep your eyes glued too! I always get chills when the final hand is laid down on the table and we move from the cards in tight onto Lancey’s eyes and then Edward G. is so cool once the camera pulls back after that. The Cincinnati Kid admittedly drags in parts, but the poker playing scenes are top notch largely because of Edward G. Robinson.
One of my absolute favorites from Little Caesar (1931) moving forward, Edward G. Robinson is shown above on a 1934 Carreras Film Stars tobacco card, a popular set of oval shaped cards.
